Sussex-Ukraine partnership to tackle global crop problems

In early November 2017, Dr Konstantin Blyuss visited the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine to discuss collaboration aimed at developing techniques for reducing crop losses. Ukraine is the worlds largest exporter of sunflower seeds and in the top five producers of potatoes, wheat, barley and corn but up to 30% of the crops are lost annually due to various parasites. Mathematical models developed recently by Dr Blyuss have suggested significant new insights that can facilitate ways of tackling this major agricultural problem.

During the trip Dr Blyuss met with colleagues from Prydniprovsky Scientific Centre, the Institute for Food Biotechnology and Genomics, as well the Institute for Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry. A Memorandum of Understanding for the purposes of research cooperation was signed between the University of Sussex and the Prydniprovsky Scientific Centre, which will lay formal grounds for cooperation between Sussex and research institutes in Ukraine. This research memorandum of understanding is the first such agreement for MPS and the first memorandum specifically for research cooperation for the University of Sussex with any organisation in Eastern Europe. It is envisaged that, in the next few years, mathematical techniques developed at Sussex will be translated into new technologies for improving crop performance, thus enhancing global food security.
