Department of Catalytic Synthesis

Lyubov Patrylak

Lyubov Patrylak

Head of Department
Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor

The division was established in 1959 by an Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, V.S. Hutyria, as the Department of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Chemistry, a part of the Institute of Polymer and Monomer Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1963, the department was renamed the Department of Catalytic Synthesis, which was headed from 1963 to 1989 by P.M. Galich, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, winner of the L.V. Pysarzhevsky Prize, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor. From 1990 to 2012, the department was headed by Professor K.I. Patryliak, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, winner of the State Prize of Ukraine, founder of the school for the development of new zeolite catalysts for petrochemical processes. Since 2012, the department has been headed by Professor L.K. Patryliak, Doctor of Chemical Sciences.

The main areas of scientific activity include:

  • Acid-base catalysis of hydrocarbon conversion;
  • New phenomena in the field of heterogeneous catalysis and the nature of catalytic activity of zeolite catalysts;
  • Study of adsorption and acid-base properties of heterogeneous catalysts;
  • Studying the patterns of carbon ion reactions and the effectiveness of synthesised catalysts in model reactions and real hydrocarbon mixtures;
  • Synthesis of micro-mesoporous carbon sorbents and catalysts;
  • Production of biofuels and biolubricants based on renewable raw materials, oils of various origins and ethyl/propyl/butyl alcohols;
  • Development and synthesis of environmentally safe surfactants, technological systems and materials;
  • Conversion of simple carbohydrates (glucose, fructose) to platform substances (5-hydroxymethylfurfural, levulinic acid, etc.).
  • Oleochemical syntheses based on fatty acid epoxides.

The Department conducts fundamental and applied research in the field of petrochemistry and coal chemistry, in particular, the processing of petroleum hydrocarbons, as well as the production of biofuels, fuel and lubricants, and other oleochemical substances from plant feedstocks.

For a long time, the Department's research focused on the scientific direction of ‘Catalysis of complex hydrocarbon reactions,’ which included the study of new phenomena in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, the nature of the catalytic activity, and reaction mechanisms for the development of domestic zeolite catalysts of both acid and basic types. Later, new areas were launched related to the synthesis of alternative fuels and fuel and lubricating materials based on renewable oil raw materials, as well as the use of natural carbohydrates (sucrose and fructose) as raw materials for obtaining platform substances (5-hydroxymethylfurfural and levulinic acid) for the synthesis of valuable chemical products based on them. One of the research areas was also the development of biosynthetic surfactants (bio-surfactants) from by-products of vegetable oil and technical fat production, combining microemulsion synthesis of nano-dispersed calcium carbonate with different morphologies and polymorphic modification, followed by the formation of oleo-thickening agents and other functional additives for the creation of competitive lubricants. Recent research has focused on environmentally safe heterogeneous catalytic processes for the synthesis of platform substances based on oleoepoxides as promising starting materials for the production of lubricants, bioplasticisers / stabilisers for PVC, biopolymers, etc.
