The Department was established in 1963 by Saul Bentsionovych Serebrianyi, Doctor of Chemical Sciences. From 1985 to 2008, the Department was headed by Volodymyr Kostiantynovych Kibirev, Doctor of Biological Sciences. Since April 2008, the Department has been headed by Professor Oleg Borisovich Smolii, Doctor of Chemical Sciences. In 2018, the Department gained the name Chemistry of Natural Compounds. The Department includes a Laboratory of Medical and Biological Research headed by Professor Larysa Oleksiivna Metelytsia, Doctor of Biological Sciences.
