The Department develops methods for obtaining new functional materials and practically important products from renewable plant feedstocks and wastes of various origins. A significant part of the Department's work is devoted to research and resolution of acute environmental problems.

The Department conducts fundamental and applied research in the field of petrochemistry and coal chemistry, in particular, the processing of petroleum hydrocarbons, as well as the production of (bio)fuels, lubricants and other oleochemicals from plant feedstocks.

The Department develops and researches new polyfunctional biocompatible conductive/conjugated polymers and their nanocomposites as sensory, electrically conductive, thermosensitive, photoactive, shielding and adsorption active materials.

The Department secures the implementation of works related to the planning and organisation of basic and applied research at the Institute, training of highly qualified researchers, and protection of rights to intellectual property.
